Alexandru Petrescu began his term as President of the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) in December 2023, following his appointment by the Romanian Parliament. He represents ASF as a Member in the main decision-making bodies (the Boards of Supervisors) of both the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).
Prior to this appointment, Alexandru Petrescu served as a Member of the Government of Romania, successively holding the positions of Minister of Economy, Minister for Business Environment, Commerce and Entrepreneurship, and Minister of Communications and Information Society. During his last ministerial term, he was also responsible for coordinating the European Digital Single Market agenda, acting as President of the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE) during Romania’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Alexandru Petrescu obtained his BSc (Hons) degree in Business Administration from the University of South Wales, United Kingdom, in 2001. He has extensive experience in the financial services sector, having held various executive positions within banking and financial institutions in the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Romania, where he coordinated activities related to investment banking, international payment systems, commercial banking services, and innovative financial products. His professional expertise also includes the development and implementation of cybersecurity solutions and complex IT&C infrastructures for both public and private entities.
With an active presence in the Romanian public sphere, Alexandru Petrescu has dedicated his career to promoting business initiatives and innovative projects with a positive impact on markets and consumers, achievements that have earned him recognition in various fields (e.g., “Best CEO for Turnaround Performance” and “Successful Leader”).
As General Manager and Board Member of the National Credit Guarantee Fund for SMEs (FNGCIMM), and later as a Member of the Supervisory Board of the Romanian Counter-Guarantee Fund (FRC), Alexandru Petrescu was involved in implementing policies aimed at facilitating SMEs’ access to finance and providing management consultancy to support the growth and consolidation of the small and medium-sized enterprise sector. He also served as a Member of the Board of the Investor Compensation Fund, an entity operating under the coordination of the Financial Supervisory Authority.
Throughout his professional career, Alexandru Petrescu has consistently advocated for the adoption of best practices in economic governance and for the continuous improvement of the economic and financial regulatory framework at both national and European levels
