Theodore Papanghelis

President, Centre for the Greek Language; Emeritus Professor of Latin, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece

Theodore Papanghelis read Classics at the Aristotle University, Thessaloniki and at St John’s College, Cambridge. As Professor Ordinarius and Chair of Latin at the Classics Department, Aristotle University, he taught classical Greek and Latin authors while also conducting seminars in various departments of Classics in England, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Aegypt and Cyprus. As head of the organizing committee and in collaboration with Oxford University he is in charge of international conferences on Latin Philology organized under the aegis of the Trends in Classics journal in Thessaloniki. He is a member of the scientific committee for the Trends in Classics, Rivista di Filologia e di Istruzione Classica and Hellenica. He took part in several research programmes for the Greek Ministry of Education and The Greek National Bank Cultural Foundation. His publications include monographs, articles in journals and translations; he has also co-edited several volumes on questions of classical scholarship. Over the last twenty five years he has been a regular columnist for the prestigious Greek newspaper To Vima, writing and commenting on a wide range of educational, cultural and political issues. Today he is Emeritus Professor of Latin, a regular member of the Academy of Athens and President of the Centre for the Greek Language.
