Metropolitan Nikolaos (Chatzinikolaou) has studied Physics in Greece, Astrophysics at Harvard University and Mechanical Engineering at MIT. His Ph.D. studies in Biomedical Engineering and Applied Mathematics took place under the HST (Harvard-MIT joint program). His research focused on the hemodynamics of the heart and on space medical technology.  He, also, studied Theology at Holy Cross School of Theology, in Brookline, Mass, and holds a Th.D. in Bioethics from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Moreover, he has been awarded honorary doctorate by the National University of Athens and by Panteion University in Athens. In 2004, he was elected Bishop of Eastern Attica. He is the director of the Hellenic Center for Biomedical Ethics in Athens, and the chairman of the Bioethics Committee of the Church of Greece. He founded the first Palliative Care Unit in Greece by the name of “Galilee” and he is engaged in a broad spectrum of philanthropic activities in Greece and abroad.
