Dr. Nikolaos Thomaidis, Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, is specialized in Environmental and Food Chemistry. He leads a dedicated scientific group, Trace Analysis and Mass Spectrometry (TrAMS) group (http://trams.chem.uoa.gr/) and has established a constant research activity in the last 25 years (>290 papers and 17 book chapters, >10,000 citations, h-56). He has extensive experience in supervising and coordinating research projects with both national and European funding. Due to the available high-end High Resolution Mass Spectrometric (HRMS) instrumentation and the highly experienced personnel, TrAMS is since 2016, the reference laboratory for the determination of priority pollutants and emerging contaminants of the Black Sea, funded by UNDP. Moreover, TrAMS has established strong collaborations with OSPAR and HELCOM Commissions for advanced chemical analysis in biota (including marine mammals) and sediments of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, respectively. Prof. Thomaidis was an active member of the international SCORE network on sewer biomarker analysis for community health assessment through wastewater-based epidemiology (COST Action ES1307, 896141) and currently he is coordinating a research team for the development of NGS and multiplex PCR methods for the reliable quantification of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater and the development of an early warning system for the detection of COVID-19 distribution within the community in Greece.
