Eleni Varvitsioti

Journalist, The Financial Times

I’m the Financial Times Greece and Cyprus correspondent recently back in Athens after six years as chief EU correspondent in Brussels, for Greece’s leading newspaper “KATHIMERINI” and TV station “SKAI”. During my time in the Belgian capital, I covered extensively the Eurozone crisis with a focus on Greece’s debt crisis and bailout negotiations. From that post I have covered EU’s biggest stories over the past six years including migration and Brexit. My coverage of the Greek crisis received an award of journalistic excellence and I also co-authored a book on the issue, published in English and Greek in 2019, which received widespread critical acclaim and has sold over 50,000 copies in its first six months. Before my posting to Brussels, I accumulated 10 years of experience as an investigative reporter, covering topics across corners of the world, from the U.S. to Haiti, Argentina and Egypt. I have interviewed heads of state and international institutions as well as other leading figures in politics, civil society and business. I frequently moderate high-level panels and have appeared as an expert on the Eurozone in many leading international media such as BBC News and Radio, SKY News as well as on CNN’s Christiane Amanpour program.
