Professor of Transplant Biology and Consultant Surgeon, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford; Professor of Transplantation at Leiden University. Educated and trained at Universities of Leiden and Wisconsin (Dr. FO Belzer). Involved in development and international implementation of UW Solution. Appointed Professor of Surgery, University of Groningen in 2001, and former Secretary and President of ESOT. His research focuses on mechanisms of injury and perfusion, improving organ quality. He developed novel perfusion devices (kidney/liver) (OrganAssist). Established the UK Quality in Organ Donation Biobank (QUOD) and Consortium for Organ Preservation in Europe (COPE) delivering three major perfusion trials. >30 highly competitive funding awards from national/international organisations, >350 publications (H-index 60) and portfolio >£7m. He received several awards including the Outstanding Clinical Research Award (Transplantation Society) and Clinical Excellence Award (UK). Elected Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of England (2011).
